"In 2016, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, at which I am Curator & Head of the Department of South Asian Art, contracted Anwar and Media Kombai. We wanted to create a video for this 'South Indian Temple Hall' gallery, then under renovation, so that visitors could get a vivid understanding of the varied life these types of structures continue to serve in their communities. Under Anwar's extraordinary direction, Media Kombai documented the full richness of daily life in the temple as it stands today, from festivals to marriages, puja to quiet morning personal devotion. An edited version of this film plays in the gallery space itself, and visitors consistently tell us it brings the stones to life for them. In future, we look forward to using even more of this extraordinary film in many new ways. I worked in person with Media Kombai at the temple in Madurai for a week during filming and was more than impressed by their professionalism, collegiality, and sheer skill. What makes this company extra special is Anwar himself, who is both a fine scholar with a deep understanding of the social history of the region (I learned much from him) and a director with an extraordinary eye for detail and pace."

In the Muslim house from Chickmagalur at the DakshinaChitra Museum, Anwar worked on four different videos, all of which have been playing to the rapt attention of the visitors. "From October 2022 to May 2023 the Linden-Museum Stuttgart, at which I am curator in the department of East, Southeast and South Asia, presented the exhibition “Of Love and War: Tamil (Hi)Stories from India and the World”. The exhibition discussed popular historical narratives, artistic achievements and cultural identities of Tamil speaking communities in India and beyond. In this project, Kombai S. Anwar was a very important partner. Apart from his much valued advice on many topics of our exhibition and apart from helping us with his great networks, he made several major contributions that decidedly shaped the entire exhibition: Anwar contributed four very informative and well-made documentary films to our exhibition. In creating these films, Anwar could draw on his great scholarly expertise in the social history of the region as well as on a vast archive of video footage he has created over the years. Cutting and new filming was done in a very fruitful dialogue and exactly to match our needs……… I worked with Anwar throughout the long preparations for our exhibition from 2018 to 2022 and was more than impressed by his knowledge, his empathy and skills as film maker.
